The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of my Short Trip to Upstate New York

Wednesday evening of this past week I had to fly out to Syracuse, NY for a work meeting on Thursday morning. A supplier that I work with is located in the Finger Lakes region so I have taken this trip many times. It is never a great flight because it is on a tiny plane which tends to be uncomfortable but I had no idea what I was in for this time.

The Bad
The early evening flight was sold out so I was on a 9:45 flight which meant that after picking up my rental car and driving to Auburn I would likely be at my hotel by midnight. It wasn't going to be great but not that bad either.

Unfortunately my flight was delayed but since it wasn't too bad of a delay so I wasn't that concerned. After boarding the flight the pilot apologized that the air conditioning wasn't working. It was absolutely miserable - think 100 degrees with no air circulation. A baby in the back of the plane was screaming his head off most of the flight and although it made the situation worse I really couldn't blame him. On top of that the gentleman sitting beside me didn't feel limited to his own seat area and was almost sitting on top of me.

About half an hour into the flight I was trying to concentrate on my book and ignore my discomfort when the pilot came back on the PA. Due to some maintenance issues we had to head back to Detroit. A few minutes later the pilot came back to let us know that since they needed to burn off some fuel before the approach we needed to circle for a while before landing. After over an hour of miserable flying I was back where I started.

At first the air conditioning of the terminal was a welcome change but quickly the drastic change in temperature started to give me terrible chills. After an hour and a half of the flight saying we were about to board a new flight we finally managed to get on a new flight and head toward Syracuse. Lucky for me we had the same seat assignments so Mr. I Don't Care About Your Personal Space was next to me again.

When we finally arrived I was thrilled that I had only packed a carry on and didn't have to wait for any baggage. I also nearly kissed the rental car agent because she had kept the agency open over two hours after they normally close to wait for our flight. I got on the road and made it to my hotel in Auburn at nearly three in the morning.

I've flown a lot, but this was my worst flight experience. Don't get me wrong, I've had flights delayed longer or cancelled and stuck someplace for a day. But in each of those instances I've made the best of things by enjoying some extended sightseeing somewhere or relaxing and reading at an airport cafe. In short, my original plans were derailed but I wasn't miserable. On this trip I was just physically feeling miserable the entire time, plus I knew I would only be able to catch a few hours of sleep before a full day of work where I needed to be interacting with people all day.

The Good
This post isn't all doom and gloom. After making it through the day on Thursday I went out for dinner at a lovely place called the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles with my coworkers. The Sherwood Inn is across the street from a park overlooking Skaneateles Lake so before we sat down for dinner I wandered around a bit and took a few pictures. It was really beautiful and I wished I had some time to enjoy the lake.

Back at the Sherwood Inn I had a wonderful dinner. The restaurant's history dates back to 1807 when it was a stagecoach stop. The building itself was charming with blue clapboard and shingle siding and black shutters. Inside it was just as quaint and we ate our dinner on their Lakeview Porch and watched the sun set.

Our food was delicious. We started by sharing some appetizers including the Dynamite Calamari, which were crispy fried and tossed with hot peppers, Sriracha chili vinaigrette, cilantro and lime, and the Sherwood Kettle Chips, which were freshly made and served with melted blue cheese, bacon and bacon-ranch dipping sauce. Both were incredible and I would not be able to pick a favorite.

For dinner I had the Ommegang Steamed Seafood entree which consisted of littleneck clams, shrimp and mussels steamed in a Belgian Ale with fingerling potatoes, cherry tomatoes, yellow peppers and Swiss chard. The seafood was cooked perfectly and I loved the dish. I was stuffed after dinner but made the mistake of looking at the dessert menu anyway and couldn't help ordering the Strawberry-Rhubarb Lemon Tart. It was a lemon tart with a strawberry rhubarb topping that was out of this world. I think I need to try to make something like this at home sometime.

The Ugly
After a my wonderful meal the stress of the flight into town had been replaced with simple exhaustion. I got into my car to drive to my hotel near the airport looking forward to getting a full night of sleep before flying home on Friday morning. That was not to be, however.
During my drive, my airline called with a pre-recorded message to inform me that my flight home was cancelled. I didn't pick up since I was driving and by the time I was able to reschedule my flight everything was booked up except for the 6:10 am flight. My dreams of sleep flew out the window. I can't explain how defeated I felt especially knowing that I was going to have to be at work late on Friday. I ended up making it through the day (it was not pretty!) and needless to say that when I made it home at nine in the evening I crashed. Hard. Really hard.

Looking back (now that I've slept!) it's a funny story and I am going to be getting some frequent flier mileage compensation which takes a little sting out of things. What was your worst flying experience? Delays, cancellations, redirected flight: I want to hear!

Michigan Tailgate Cake: All American Theme

Yesterday was the home opener for the 2012 Michigan Football season. We played Air Force so the tailgate theme was "All-American".

After a long and stressful work week I decided to make a simple design for the cake, taking an American flag and modifying the white star field on blue to be a maize and blue Michigan logo.

I made a chocolate cake using Beatty's Chocolate Cake recipe from Ina Garten. I baked it in a sheet cake pan and then cut it in half to make a two layer, rectangular shaped cake.

Next, I made up a double batch of buttercream icing. I used a Wilton #789 decorating tip to ice the cake, smoothing it with a large offset spatula.

With my cake iced, I turned to making my flag design on the cake. Although fondant looks prettier and is easier to work with I decided to use rolled buttercream because it tastes yummier. I made up a batch and tinted some of it red and some of it blue. I rolled out the blue first, cut out a rectangle and placed it in the top left of the cake. I then rolled out the red, cut it into strips and layered it onto the cake to make the stripes of the flag.

My final step was to tint some of my leftover buttercream from icing my cake a maize color. I used a flat basketweave tip to make a block M shape on the blue rectangle and then used a small spatula to smooth together the seams.

Although I always notice the imperfections on my cakes, I think it turned out pretty cute and most importantly it tasted delicious. The icing on the cake (if you excuse my terrible pun) was that Michigan beat Air Force. It wasn't a pretty win, but after the loss to Alabama last week we'll take what we can get. Go Blue!

Strawberry Ricotta Salad with Mint

Back in November 2010 I visited Sydney, Australia with my friends Erin and Andy for a vacation. We were staying in the Potts Point area and on our first morning we discovered a wonderful little cafe down the street from our hostel called Cafe DOV for breakfast. The food was so wonderful that we ended up grabbing breakfast there every day for our whole stay so that we could everything on their awesome menu.

On one of those mornings I tried their bread pudding which was served with a side of strawberries and ricotta. It was absolutely delicious and ever since eating it I have thought about trying to recreate something similar at home.

After seeing some wonderful looking strawberries for sale at the grocery store I decided to buy them, pick a bunch of mint from my garden and have a go at putting a recipe together.

I like how my dish turned out and I think it would make a nice little side for a pancake brunch or a great dessert served with some pound cake.

Ingredients List
- 6 cups strawberries, cut in half and stems removed
- 1 cup ricotta
- 1 Tbsp. cream
- 2 Tbsp. powdered sugar
- Scant 1/4 cup of fresh mint leaves, loosely packed

Directions
- Put ricotta in a small bowl and mix in cream and powdered sugar until smooth
- Place 4 cups of the strawberries in a bowl with ricotta mixture and gently stir to coat
- Add in mint and gently stir again
- Serve salad with remaining strawberries scattered on top plus a garnish of mint

Thoughts On Freezer Meals

Monday night after returning from Texas, Frank and I visited a special person who just recently returned home from a stay in the hospital. I thought that some sunflowers in a mason jar would be cheerful to bring over in addition to a freezer meal. I've found that giving a homemade dish that a person can pop in the oven when they are under the weather is generally a welcomed gesture.

I thought that I would try out making something new so after perusing some recipes I prepared Martha Stewart's Baked Pasta with Chicken Sausage.

When I give away freezer meals I like to write out a little card with the name of the dish and directions for heating it up. I wrap a layer of plastic wrap around the dish, set the directions on top and then add another layer of plastic wrap. Sandwiching the directions between layers of plastic wrap makes sure that they don't get lost even if the recipient doesn't get around to heating up the dish for a month or two.

The recipe makes two small pans so I cooked up one for Frank and I to try for dinner since I didn't want to give away a dish that I didn't think tasted okay. We both really liked it and it was quite easy to prepare so I think I will definitely make it again sometime.

This also has me thinking about making some freezer meals for myself. I work a lot of long hours and when I come home late I just want to relax so I tend to eat junk instead of taking time to make a decent meal for myself. Having some premade meals on hand in the freezer would be a easy way for me to eat a little better when I am stressed out and busy and don't feel like making any effort.

Do you have any good freezer meals that you enjoy? I'd love to hear about some new recipes to stock up my freezer.

Week in Pictures: 9.3.2012

Labor Day weekend was this past week which means the start of college football. Michigan played Alabama on Saturday in the Cowboys Classic in Dallas which meant that of course Frank and I headed down there for a few days. I had never been to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and I really enjoyed it, despite Michigan's loss.

First Row
- Wednesday evening after work Frank and I flew out to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area
- We stayed in the Sundance Square area of Ft. Worth. The area was full of Art Deco buildings and our hotel was walking distance from lots of shops and restaurants.
- On Thursday morning we headed to the Dallas Arboretum to check out the Chihuly Exhibition. The sculputures were amazing and a huge highlight of the trip for me.

Second Row
- Friday we went to Dallas to visit the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza which chronicles the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. It's an important part of American history, but it was incredibly sad to see.
- While in Texas I ate a lot of Tex-Mex food and may have enjoyed a margarita or two
- We also went to the Ft. Worth Stockyards to watch the Texas Longhorn cattle drive on Friday afternoon and enjoy some BBQ. Yum!

Third Row
- The whole purpose of our trip was to tailgate and watch the game on Saturday. With limited tailgating spaces we arrived at Cowboys Stadium over an hour before the parking lot opened so that we could make sure to grab a spot. We ended up securing enough space for four pop-up tents and had a wonderful time with about a hundred people hanging out at the tailgate. It was ridiculously hot, but a ton of fun.
- Cowboys Stadium was a really great locale and we had wonderful seats, but the game was painful to watch with Alabama handily beating Michigan
- Sunday was a laid back day spent doing a little more wandering around enjoying the architecture at Sundance Square followed by another trip to the Stockyards. I also popped into an old Fire Station that had a cool exhibit about the 150 years of history of Ft. Worth.

How was your holiday weekend? Did you do anything fun? Are you ready for fall to start?
