Choosing Tin Ceiling Tiles

After deciding that we would put up tin ceiling tiles in the room that will become Frank's office when he moves in, I set about doing some searching for, you guessed it, tin ceiling tiles. I wanted something made from steel, which is what the ceilings were traditionally made from, as well as had good quality and price.

After poking around on the internet for a bit I really liked American Tin Ceilings. Most of the tiles, which are 24" square were about $7 each unfinished and the testimonials on their page commended the quality of the tiles and packaging. Although due to the size of the room 24" patterns would be way too large, we wern't sure if 12" or 6" patterns would look best so I decided to order a few samples for Frank and I to check out.

First up are the tiles that we didn't choose (Pattern 3, Pattern 20, Pattern 30). They are all lovely, but with a 6" pattern they seemed a little small and we wanted the impact that a 12" pattern would provide. I think on a wall or as a backsplash these would look awesome, though.

Here are the two patterns that we ended up choosing. On the left is Pattern 1 which Frank choose for his study. Since we are going to redo the ceiling in the guest room next door as well, I thought it would be nice to also do that with tin, but for that room I choose the pattern on the right, which is Pattern 2.

Here are a few close-up shots of the two tiles.

I can't say enough about how lovely they look in person and how the photos don't do the tiles justice. I can't wait to put my order in and put up these ceilings. We still have the small matter of putting up the plywood substrate before we get to that point, but that is for another day...

I am anxious to see the end results. I have only seen tin used as a back splash and that was stunning. I would think that a tin ceiling would reflect a lot of light and that would be a good thing. Is there any recommended method or frequency that a tin ceiling requires?

Kathy- I bet it looks lovely in your kitchen!

Mary-Lou- We are planning on sealing it after we install in, but you could also paint it or have it powder coated.

Hilary- Thank you! I'm excited to install them!

Adding the ceiling tiles to any room can completely enhance the beauty of your room. They are very easy to install and cost a wonderful price.
